OP Veterans Memorial
Description: Ninety-seven-year-old World War II Purple Heart recipient and Marine veteran Morris Semiatin fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima in March of 1945. He was at the iconic flag-raising. After the Veterans Day Memorial service, I asked if I could take his picture. He gave me a thumbs-up. This gentleman personifies what Veterans Day is all about.
The cost of the battle was staggering. The assault units of the corps—Marines and organic Navy personnel—sustained 24,053 casualties, by far the highest single-action losses in Marine Corps history. Of these, a total of 6,140 died. Roughly one Marine or corpsman became a casualty for every three who landed on Iwo Jima.
