I'm sure that is true. The Japanese have been guilty of this as have other nations. And we have a big problem in our own country with cod fishing in the Outer Banks. I'm just not ready to accept wholesale declarations that all the popular fish species are being fished to extinction. To do so leads my down the global warming path. The authorities say so and you should believe.
I've talked to scallop fisherman who say that the practice of declaring large areas off limits for extended periods is actually harmful because the scallops breed over each other and smother the fellows on the bottom. True? I don't know but I am cynical that bureaucrats always have the interest of their charges as much in mind as they do their pay grade. As a trustee, I have run into mindlessness on the part of Fish and Game and EPA authorities on a number of occasions. |
