Section 23: OPA Elections Subject: Candidates Forum Msg# 924179

Tom, while I agree with much of what you wrote, Town Hall meetings may draw 100 voting association members. The annual meeting last year saw a packed room, but there were actually less than 100 voting association members in the room. There are 8440 or so association member votes.
As an aside, Town Hall meetings were traditionally run by the Board of Directors. The GM began running them only after Bob Thompson became GM. There is a board motion, passed some years back, saying the board itself shall hold at least three Town Hall meetings a year. Asking for non-binding votes on some key issues in the election process might be a good idea, but I'd rather spend the money on a separate mailing of such an approach is deemed a good idea, or maybe the assessment package. However, surely you realize the questions asked would be political. Look at OPA's website. It is primarily a sales brochure. The GM operates on a policy of See nothing wrong; say nothing is wrong, listen to nothing wrong. I believe you addressed this conflict between the board and the GM during the Candidates Forum. You said something to the effect that this political battle would go one with each elections cycle. You are correct. However, given board members are elected and the GM is a board employee, if the GM remains a political lightning rod dividing the community, what do you think most reasonable people totally outside the community would see as the solution? |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Joe, we need to improve our community relations with the board by providing a way for the entire community to communicate our needs and desires. That is the only way we can provide them with some guidance and direction while they deliberate among themselves on the important issues that need to be addressed. I felt this step was missing particularly on the construction of our new Yacht Club. It can be as simple as including a computer scan survey, sent out as an enclosure in our membership yearly assessment bill, and returned with same. At least this would be a method to receive some direct feedback from our membership. Any feedback is better than none. Additionally, all Board members should be invited to periodic Town Hall-like meetings, along with the General Manager, so they themselves can answer direct questions from the membership, in an informal atmosphere, as to how and why they voted as they did on the issues that came before them. By fostering a better relationship between the community, members of the board, and management, we can help achieve our goals. |
