About 55 years ago I was wading around the edge of Lake Waterford in Anne Arundel County, fly fishing for bass, chain pickerel, and bluegills. As I rounded a point, I came upon another fly fisherman doing the same. We talked about the fishing for a bit and went on our ways. We again happened upon each other the following weekend at Lake Waterford. Talked some more about fly fishing and exchanged phone numbers. Thus began my decades-long relationship with a flyfisherman who happened to be black.
We traveled together to fishing locations all over Maryland and a few adjoining states, sometimes on weekend trips and staying in a tent. Trout fishing on Big Hunting Creek; smallmouth bass fishing on the upper Potomac River; striped bass fishing all over Chesapeake Bay. I saw firsthand the ugly face of discrimination. Campgrounds refusing to admit us because my friend was black. My friend's absolute refusal to go into some restaurants. Many instances long forgotten. I am not going to blame myself for these cultural facts. I do not accept this notion that I am somehow at fault for being born white. What I can do is support reasonable laws that protect the rights of every American. What I can do is treat every person with respect, and expect that same respect in return. Cultural change takes time. Things have certainly improved since I was in grade school and the schools were supposed to be "separate but equal." Does racism still exist? Certainly. Does this current attempt to place all whites on a guilt trip advance the elimination of intolerance? I think not. Image below from Joe Reynolds - Image Title: Jackson with Bluegill |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Joe, Step one. Ask yourself, would be willing to be a black person in America? If not think about why not, it may uncover something of ones white privilege. Two, read about the Black experience in America. Three join Be The Bridge, to broaden ones experience. Join NAACP in Worcester County to build relationships and learn, see if white privilege is something leaders in NAACP would say is real. Eliminating white privilege is not likely to happen in our lifetime. Taking steps personally to understand it and actually use ones privilege to make a difference is possible. My journey started on a farm in rural Maine. Never even saw a person of color till I was in high school. Took a Greyhound bus to Boston to go to college. Had a work study job in Roxbury, the black section. A white farm boy, working in a YMCA. Everyone else was black. Visiting a hospital with kids injured playing basketball and seeing whites served again and again before the black youth I brought to the hospital. The journey goes on, may years have passed different cities, different countries, all have been part of my learning and I am still learning. There is a lot of literature on the topic easily accessible the the Worcester County Library as well. Steve |
