For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The balance is in the 99.x% of material that doesn't acknowledge gender diversity or encourage teens to explore social justice of all stripes. Of 90 books on the list, you used all LGTBQ+ titles as examples. Are you saying that these books, which represent the real-life struggles of kids in the LGTBQ+ community, are politically subversive? Ted Elder's quote in The Dispatch represents the problem in a nutshell: >> “To me, it’s just a way of separating everyone by groups rather than individuality,” he said. “I strongly believe in individuality and content of character. I believe more so in that." >> What he's saying, essentially, is that because he considers himself to be nondiscriminatory and accepting of the status quo, he'd just as soon not have marginalized individuals rock the boat and make *him* feel bad about it. Those individuals are already separate, and not by their own choosing. It's easy to believe in individuality and character when yours is never called into question because of your skin color or who you love. Kudos to the Worcester County Library for not just acknowledging diversity, but for also providing teens with the encouragement and tools to explore it. |
