Section 5: OPA Board Subject: ROC on OPVFD Msg# 1195290

Based on reporting in the Bayside Gazette, it looks like the OPVFD is going to simply ignore OPA and move forward with some sort of renovation project with the funding they have, and not even think about the plan proposed by OPA for a needed new structure.
IMO, no local bank will give OPVFD a $2MM mortgage, based on their financials, without OPA backstopping it. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Amy, I listened to the ROC podcast where you and Sherrie Clifford discussed the negotiations between OPA and the OPVFD. The first thing that struck me was on a number of occasions you were quoting, word for word, what I wrote in my commentary "Fine Kettle of Fish." Given ROC's stated claim to be a media outlet, and the podcast's discussion of ethics, perhaps you should have at last credited me when you quoted me. It seemed like you and Sherrie were professing to be experts in the field of negotiations. While you roundly condemned Rick Farr for discussing ongoing negotiations in a Progress front-page article, you seemed to take great pleasure in reporting what the spouse of an OPVFD official said in roundly condemning OPA, Rick Farr, and the Board of Directors on social media in a disparaging manner that apparently went far beyond anything Farr said. As for the lecture about conducting negotiations, I think it is reasonable to think the volunteers who run and are elected to the board are not professional negotiators, no more than you when you were on the board. You did point out one issue that has me puzzled. Is there factual information that the Yacht Club has over $1 million in banquets booked through 2026 or is that just an offhand hope/guess? Based on reporting in the Bayside Gazette, it looks like the OPVFD is going to simply ignore OPA and move forward with some sort of renovation project with the funding they have, and not even think about the plan proposed by OPA for a needed new structure. OPVFD may be biting off its nose to spite its face. There is no winner here. That is unfortunate, on many levels. Based on the Gazette article and the comments of an OPVFD spouse on social media, we now have an openly adversarial relationship between OPA and OPVFD, and OPA is a major funding source each year for OPVFD. There is not one word in the agenda for Saturday's board meeting related to the OPVFD. |
