Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Offshore Wind Lawsuit Msg# 1216448

What you have is Worcester County Commissioners withholding their support of the Foundation's recent $5 million DNR grant request, of which 90% or $4.5 million will benefit Worcester County, as punishment for the Foundation taking $125,000 in US Wind grants and decision of neutrality on the question of offshore wind turbines. Do the math............. $%#$ dumb.
Perhaps you are being somewhat naive. Those offshore wind companies are not handing out money with the expectation of no return, or out of their concern for the environment. They are buying silence.... and they succeeded. Also, some people previously employed by these local enviro groups have gone to work for the wind companies. Coastal Bays should be more interested in support from the county to obtain $5 million instead of greedily taking $125,000 from some offshore company to buy their silence on that issue. For Coastal Bays to say they take no position on that offshore project is the height of arrogance. Frankly, citizens should know more about how Coastal Bay spends its grant money. For example, that project called Jenkins Point. Supposedly it was put out for bids. They apparently selected the low bidder who was at two OPA meetings. At the initial meeting the low bidder said his bid was $8 million. Six months or so later, the low bidder said his bid was $10 million. To my knowledge there are not even any construction drawings. I expressed concerns about how the project for doing work around the South Gate Pond was handled. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Everything you said is true, but............. Maryland Coastal Bays Foundation is a relatively small non-profit organization with a little under $3 million in annual revenue. They've been successful in in securing 5-year DNR grants with Worcester County support worth $1 million a year ($5 million over 5 years). That's about 33% of their annual revenue. Take note that 90% of the Foundation's coastal bay programs are in Worcester County (10% is in Chincoteague Bay in Virginia).
