It is difficult to say how all this will play out. In the dispute over the budget of the Worcester school system a couple of years ago, Fiori was initially supportive of budget reductions. Then supporters of giving the school system whatever it requested threatened to boycott his business operations.
It has definitely been interesting to watch the apparent commissioner majority shift over the past two years, considering it has been the same seven people sitting in the seats the entire time. In the spring of 2023 both Fiori and Elder were supportive of school budget restrictions, each voting in favor of MOE in the final budget vote. They were joined by Bertino, Bunting, and Abbott, which resulted in a 5-2 tally. It appeared at first to be heading in a similar direction last year, before Fiori fell away and the remaining majority of four settled on something in between MOE and the full BOE request. Then when it came time to elect new officers last fall, Bertino and Bunting were ousted as president and vice-president in favor of Elder and Fiori. That vote tally was 6-1, with only Bunting opposed, but one doubts it was quite that clean behind the scenes. That brings us up to the current water/sewer deliberations, where it thus far appears Fiori and Elder are going to join Mitrecic and Purnell to create a four person majority. As you said, difficult to see how it will all play out. Both the water/sewer and BOE budget discussions look to be worth the price of admission in Snow Hill over the next month. |
