The rink was built by the OP Chamber of Commerce and was removed by the GM Curt Allison with the idea of re-erecting it over by the Manklin Sports area but it never was. Then I heard it was no longer usable. Why it was removed from the Sports Core old tennis courts is hard to say--some were worried about liability (although it was erected for several years; but kids were crossing 589 on skates to go McDonald's), others say it was an eyesore (which it was!) but I believe it was dismantled because many, and I mean, many people from outside the Pines including many adults were constantly using the rink. For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: BTW whatever happened to the street hockey court that was at the south gate. We moved here towards the end of its life, I think but my older guys really liked it. Was it ever used much, i.e. before 1997ish? Susan Hi Susan, That court was originally the tennis court complex....hence the name Sports Core. There was an Equestrian Center, pool and tennis in that area. The courts were turned into a casually made skate hockey site and it lasted for quite a few years. I know it was there in the late eighties and early nineties. I think the wood just fell apart and it was never replaced. I heard that there were some concerns about liability...an issue which seems to be ruining a lot of fun for kids everywhere. Nancy |
