Mongolian women activists to visit Ocean City
Shagdar Battsetseg
On Tuesday, January 23, 2007 a reception for nine Mongolian women will be held at the Carousel Hotel in Ocean City. Sponsored by the Republican Women of Worcester County, the event is open to everyone regardless of political affiliation. Cost of $15 per person includes light refreshments.
The nine women traveled to the U.S. at their own expense to learn how to campaign for political office. Their aim is to learn how to get elected to the Mongolian Parliament.
Although Mongolia has been a democracy since 1990, the predominant political party is the ex-communist Mongolian Peoples Revolutionary Party.
While at a conference in Mongolia in 2005, U.N. Ambassador Ellen Sauerbrey suggested that they form a "sister club" relationship with one in the U.S. to learn more how a democracy works. Ann Granados from Ocean City contacted the Republican Women of Worcester County who enthusiastically endorsed the idea.
In 2006, the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) signed an agreement whereby members from Mongolia would come to the U.S. to participate in workshops to learn how to organize campaigns and get elected to office. Since the Mongolian Parliamentary election is in 2008, they have a lot to learn in a relatively short time.
The women arrive in the U.S. on January 12, where they will be hosted by NFRW at a week-long training seminar. They will be hosted their second week by the Maryland Federation of Republican Women and arrive in Ocean City on Monday, January 22, where they will walk on the boardwalk and have tea at the Dunes Manor Hotel.
On Tuesday morning, they will attend a luncheon/seminar on how to start a club and the structure of National and Maryland Federations of Republican women at Ed Smith's Real Estate School. In the afternoon they will get a make-up demonstration, meet with the Ocean City mayor and council and tour the Ocean City Police Department with Chief Bernadette DiPino. The evening reception will include displays from the Worcester County Youth and Family Center, Health Department and others.
On Wednesday they will attend a patriotic service at the Worcester County Veterans Memorial followed by presentations by the Worcester County Commission for Women, the McGuffey book program for local schools, tips on fundraising by the Veterans Memorial activists and women in leadership roles. They will then tour Berlin escorted by Mayor Cardinale and visit Ocean City Elementary School.
On Thursday, they will attend the monthly luncheon meeting of the Republican Women of Worcester County, and depart for Washington, DC.
For reservations call Ann Granados at 410-250-1590 or Roseann Bridgman at 410-641-7243 by Friday January 19.
