Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Community Hall Options Msg# 530844

Joe, While I have been in the Community Hall only twice, I do not find it to be a very attractive or well designed venue. I understand a "miracle makeover" could make the existing structually sound facility more attractive and useful, but I believe the current and future users would be better served by a new facility architected to fit the intended community uses (keeping in mind the principle "form follows function"). I also believe the residents of Ocean Pines have spoken for a NEW Community Center, not a refurbishment of the existing facility. Furthermore, being structually sound, should not be the only or most relevant criteria in deciding the course to take for an improved Community Center.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The fire department has said it will pay for the new building if OPA provides the land. Apparently OPA has been paying the fire department enough so it can accumulate a large reserve fund. At one point some board members were saying the fire department had a larger reserve than OPA itself. So, while the fire department will pay for the new building, it will pretty much do so with funds already given to it by OPA. It is lot owner money, anyway you look at it. Why would you want to tear down a structurally sound building, even if a new building is done? |
