At the time I was managing the average supermarket net margiin was about 3% to 5%. That doesn't allow much wiggle room. Volume can solve a lot of ills, but bad management can lose the profit.
I had better be nice to you then. My first career was with Campbell Soup as a salesman and Supermarkets were my home for many years. If I had a good relationship with the manager they would allow me to put up aisle displays to sell extra product. I still tend to straighten out items on the shelves when food shopping. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Jack; Sorry if I misled you. I was involved in the management of a supermarket in Ocean City as well as other areas during my career. The statement was intended to reflect business in general in Ocean City based on seasonality. There are a lot of business who stay open to maintain their customer base and their goal is to break even or better in the off season to do so. I know, I managed one of them. Though supermarkets and restaurants are different businesses, all businesses share the need for good management to be successful. The goal of satisfying your customers needs aligned with controlling your expenses. At the time I was managing the average supermarket net margiin was about 3% to 5%. That doesn't allow much wiggle room. Volume can solve a lot of ills, but bad management can lose the profit. |
