Section 23: OPA Elections Subject: Trash & Flooding Msg# 862756

Joe:
I've talked to a resident homeowner on sandyhyook road, both his and his neighbors properties were again flooded after this last storm. He e-mailed all candidates and Board members for help. The water lasted two days on his property. I am aware of what was done, but residents in this area evidently do not think it is enough, because the area is still flooding. I do make uninformed pronouncements because I'm not informed as well as Board members are, or should be on the issues by dealing with them on a daily basis. This will change, and I will improve. Until then I'm just expressing my thoughts, not taking action, because I don't have all the information I need. As far as water service, I would like to have been charged for actual usage instead of at some higher usage rate that I have not exceeeded. This same concept is what I feel about trash service, I would not like to be charged for someone elses usage. I am malleable Joe, keep the community informed, and I will be watching. For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I know your upset with my stance on trash collection Not upset at all, unless you are suggesting OPA should not even look into the issues/costs related to universal trash collection Let me say this, I applaud your willingness to engage in discussions here. Very refreshing. Having said that, you do suffer from a problem that the vast majority of board candidates and too board members have - a lack of knowledge about the various issues, as you freely admit, but yet make uninformed pronouncements on those issues just the same. For example, your comments about Beauchamp Road convince me you don't know that problem is essentially resolved, and very favorably resolved. Therefore I have no idea what you are talking about with your many words about solving a problem that is already solved insofar as getting water under Beauchamp Road. As for comparing garbage collection in OPA to King George and the American Revolution, what can I say?? So, I'll say nothing and let the readers come to their own conclusion. With regard to, "It just rubs me the wrong way to create a monopoly situation for any business." -- no one is remotely suggesting a monopoly. Currently OPA gets bids from trash collectors for service in the community. The contract has some limited time and is then bid again. The same would be true if the collection was for all properties or just some as is the case now. Shouting LIBERTY! LIBERTY!! LIBERTY!!! Having been down this road before with other rulers acts of unfairness[paying for water service at some set rate wheather they used that quanity of water or not]. So, if someone didn't want or use the water you would not require any payment? Same for sewage? With regard to your numbers about reserves, they show a lack of understanding about how OPA operates. Again, you are not alone... among candidates past and present, or even among board members past and present. The reserves have several components, inlcuding bulkheads, normal replacement like trucks, cars, equipment, maintenance projects on existing stuff, and also a part that is set aside for new building and/or major rehabs. The latter does not presently have enough money to pay for the $5 million required to pay for the new YC and pool. It will take another three years to collect those funds. OPA will always have a load of money in reserves overall just after the beginning of a fiscal year after most have paid their assessment. Much of that is spent over the course of the year in accordance with the budget, and possibly some unbudgeted items.... like a well pump gone bad. |
