Blue plastic water pipe (Polybutylene) was used extensively in construction from 1978 - 1995. It turned out to be a disaster. It was discovered that as the poly pipe ages, it reacts with water-soluble oxidants in the water supply. It begins to degrade from the inside and eventually cracks.
In the older sections of Ocean Pines, blue pipe was used to connect the water meters to the water main. It was inherited by Worcester County in the turnover from the developer. I doubt that it was code required since WoCo did not have a Building Code until 1981, and it does not apply to public infrastructure. What we are experiencing now is that the county is only repairing the pipe where it breaks, not replacing the whole segment until after multiple patches. Since the water main is along one side of the street, runs to the other side can be quite long, especially along Ocean Parkway. Therefore there can be multiple patches of the asphalt at the same address. In my neighborhood in Columbia, built in 1985, every house on the other side of the street has had to replace the water line from the street to the house because it was blue pipe. On my side (different developer), no one has had to. hip |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: And then there is the constant ongoing maintenance because of waterline breaks due to failure of the plastic piping that runs from the main to the water meters. Was the use of plastic piping a mistake? Seems like we have a lot of breaks if the square cuts in the road is any indication. I thought it was the sewer pipeline that was failing. |
