Section 5: OPA Board Subject: COPE Golf Petition? Msg# 879504

I do believe that the open space will increase property values and be an amenity of much greater value to all association members than is a golf course.
Maintenance of the open space would certainly be a cost, and I've never suggested otherwise. As for a fair and all inclusive referendum, the ground rules are spelled out in our by-laws, by laws approved in 2008 via referendum by the membership. If a referendum is the result of a successful petition by association members, then the referendum material will contain a recommendation/position from the Board of Directors, in addition to the information provided by the petitioners. As for a referendum to force a lease, even if successful there is no guarantee anyone will want to lease the operation on any given lease terms that protect OPA interests. The primary issue, as I see it, is for association members to first decide whether or not they want a golf course or open space. If the answer is golf course, then look at possible changes to how the course is managed, leased, or whatever. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Joe you have been a proponent of converting the golf course into a park for a long time with out taking any action. Now CORE is taking action and you are pushing even harder. You want the lemings to just folow along with out knowing all the facts. You keep stating that we are paying $120 a year in our assessement for the golf course. That is true but to make it appear that a park will put that money in our pockets is misleading. Once the golf course is converted to a park who knows what will be added and at what cost. A covered pavillion or two, playground equipment, picnic tables, grills etc. As Nate said there will be a cost to maintain a park or open space. While no one knows what the savings will be my guess is that it will not be much more that a good dinner out. I am not opposed to a referendum but the referendum must be fair and all inclusive of the facts. It can not be just close the golf course and we will save a million dollars a year. Maybe we should have a referendum that forces the BOD to try to lease the course or to open the course to full public play as Nate suggests. There may be other ways to turn the course around financially whic I am not aware of. Until some strong effot is tried all we are doing is throwing the baby out with the bath water. |
