I agree with your friend, it is a difficult course especially when compared to the "resort courses" around here which are very open and have large greens. After all, folks who don't enjoy a hard course don't come back so they do make them playable compared to ours. By the way, in olden times we used wound balls and soft covers and even the amateur could "hold the green" with an approach shot, now you have to be really good and young to get the spin required, especially since balls today are designed to spin less. Don't think what you see on TV is even the same game as played by ordinary mortals, those guys/gals are gods.
Yes folks would come, at least once. The golf business is in general decline as people don't want to spend 4 or 5 hours on one activity, I think it may exceed their attention span. I generally think it is better to let the folks who know the golf business run the business, not just manage the course. I haven't met or heard of any board or committee members who know the golf business, but I could be wrong. So if you don't know the business, how do you evaluate the decisions etc of the managers. How do you even know what they are talking about? Just sayin' |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: A friend of mine who is a serious golfer said a Robert Trent Jones course built 40 years ago in what he describes as the "dark ages" of course design would by nature be a difficult course for older players. He cited that most greens are trapped on the front and both sides so the golfer must "fly" his or her approach shot into the green and for older golfers that can be difficult. Maybe we should convert it to a public course with tee times on a first come first serve basis and advertise it to the package players as a "challenging" layout, post the par and slope (isn't that how the difficulty of a course is rated?) and see what happens? |
