Olson was fired primarily due to efforts of Bill Rakow and Pete Gomsak, and a strong supporting role by Marty Clarke. Les Purcell was convinced to go along for the ride.
Rakow and Gomsak saw Olson's inability to make the Yacht Club a "community gathering place" as his primary failing. This in spite of the fact that immediately prior to his firing, Olson produced what is likely the lowest loss in YC history for self management -- about $11,000. Thompson could do no better than Olson at making the old YC a community gathering place, and losses under Thompson ran to well over $100,000 a year. I must also say, I supported the removal of Olson at the time. Unfortunately, my perception now is we went from the frying pan to the fire. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: We will probably never know the real answer. From what I have heard, he lost favor with enough of the board members at the time and they decided to replace him. What he did, or didn't do to fall into disfavor with the board is unknown to me, and whatever information is out there for our consumption is probably not the full and complete story. |
