For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: George, the committee simply made a recommendation based nearly 100% on what is suggested on the Maryland Department of Natural Resources web site. Copy and paste. However, when someone tells me any efforts at following those recommendations will take 10 to 20 years to see results, I am extremely doubtful.... especially when we are not following all the advice. We cannot obtain 20-feet of no-mow area around much of the south gate pond. The recommendation by the committee is for a single strand fence of 20-pound monofilament about 18 inches high, but wildlife biologists recommend several strands of heavy fishing line or wire strung 4 inches, 8 inches, 12 inches, 18 inches and 24 inches above the ground. The state recommends killing off or otherwise eliminating any domestic geese. OPA is not doing that for fear of the animal rights fanatics in OPA-Land, some of whom threatened board members when the issue first came up. In short, this effort will most likely be a waste of time, effort and money. It does, however, make it look like OPA is actually doing something. Kinda like Congress passing gun control legislation as a solution to gun crime. |
