That "strange" Borg Warner transmission in your 57 Silver Hawk which Studebaker called Flightomatic, was also used by Ford (Fordomatic, Mercomatic, Cruiseomatic), AMC (Flashomatic), and Jaguar. It was, and is, a very reliable transmission. I've never had a transmission problem in any of my Studebakers. The access panel on the driveshaft hump was for checking the fluis level in the automatic transmission. The master cylinder is accessed from another panel located under the driver's foot. Early 50s technology, ya know.... | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: A design way ahead of it's time Except for those little back swing out windows. They rattled so bad I made small wood wedges and epoxied them in place to stop the rattle. Other interesting items in my Studebakers were a master brake cylinder accessed from the driveshaft hump in the cars interior and a heater located under the passenger front seat which often made cold weather driving hot for the passenger and freezing for the driver. Then there was that strange Borg Warner transmission. |
