I'm not sure why crabs might show up earlier here in the spring but suspect it has more to do with the very shallow bay here and resultant quicker warming of the water that it does with proximity to the ocean.
The item below reminds me of Piners during the winter -- in a state of torpor. When air temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C), adult crabs leave shallow, inshore waters and seek deeper areas where they bury themselves and remain in a state of torpor throughout the winter. Blue crab growth is regulated by water temperature. Growth occurs when water temperatures are above 59°F (15°C). Water temperature above 91°F (33°C) is lethal. Blue crabs are susceptible to sudden drops in temperature. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Daves crabs in the bay here? No...you are reading too fast. "They are Dave's traps" referred to the photo of the traps posted by Bob not to the many traps we see in our bays in the Spring. If so is it only for a month or so, and why here rather than the chesapeake? I believe due to our closeness to the ocean crabs tend to show up in our local bays before they do over in the Chesapeake in areas like Deal Island and Crisfield. |
