Gene, I have always valued your perspective on things OPA. I have even been able to follow your dissertations on depreciation. (It helped that I am a banker by training.) Your take on the status of the GM's office is especially valuable since you have put in more time serving this community than the vast majority of the population. What you are telling us appears consistent with the results that are readily apparent all over the community. And when one realizes that OPA is locked into an expensive contract with the present GM, your observations are doubly depressing.
I do have one quibble however. After 27 years of AF/AIr National Guard experience I can testify that the type of "leadership" exhibited by Bob Thompson in this community is disastrous in the military as well. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Carol if the Facilities Manager for OP and or the Director of Parks & Recreation do not act on a safety report involving a children's playground, the GM should be considering their replacement. Some of the GM's current management team are folks who replaced managers the GM caused to leave in one fashion on the other. The GM is not going to fire his hand picked people if he can help it. He did fire one that I know of because that manager's errant behavior was very public and the GM was forced to take action because of the negative publicity. The current GM does not like to be challenged by almost anyone... directors, committee members and association members .I know first hand from experiencing his ire when I raised questions he perceived as questioning his veracity and watching him do likewise to others. I met with him in his office immediately after one of my last B&FAC where he lashed out at me for asking a question that he said he answered at a previous meeting I attended. Problem was I was not at that meeting he referenced. In the privacy of his office, he was somewhat apologetic for his conduct. However by that time, I had had enough of his condescending attitude towards me and other committee members who are/were just trying to do their jobs of advising the board. I have also talked with a couple of the managers who left (unwillingly) and the message was the same. The GM resented them questioning his ideas. Perhaps the GM does not realize that effective leadership methods in the corporate world are different than those in the Air Force. To put this in perspective, the BoD does not want to perform their oversight function of the GM "aggressively" for fear of "micromanaging" him, but the GM tends to micromanage OPA operations IMHO. Thus, things his managers should do of their own initiative do not get done until the GM indicates he wants them done. I believe some/many things aren't done when they should be done but this is not always the fault of the GM's managers. Gene |
