Studebakers were made in Canada from January 1964 until the last Studebaker was assembled on 3/17/66. However, Avantis were never made in Canada. After the South Bend factory closed during the 64 model year, Studebaker Avanti production ended. It resumed in 1966 in one of the old South Bend factory buildings under the leadership of Leo Newman and Nate Altman, who jointly owned the Studebaker dealership in South Bend. The Avantis from 1966 on were originally known as Avanti II, later just Avanti. They used Corvette engines since the Studebaker foundry was shuttered after the 1964 model year. Only the 1963 and 1964 Avantis were known as Studebaker Avantis. They used Studebaker 289 cubic inch V-8s rated at 240 horsepower (naturally aspirated) or 289 horsepower (supercharged). A few were made with more high performance modifications and were rated at 335 horsepower.
I've been to the museum several times. It's one of the better ones. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Thanks, I'll take a look. Weren't they making them in Canada for several years after Studebaker shut down? If you happen to be a Studebaker fan check out the museum in South Bend, been there a couple of times, some really great cars and trucks, it's housed in the old factory building. |
