I didn’t keep quiet. I told John Viola everyday. Mary Bosack went to the board and they did nothing. I‘ve been to 2 attorneys-my stories not over. But as I said before, I had no authority and could only do as I was told. When I pointed out serious problems with the 2 POS systems he removed all the server names which meant reconciliation was impossible. We were sabotaged at every turn. I took pictures of the staff sitting at the Beach Club bar til 8:30 when there hadn’t been a customer since 5:15. Wasted money. But I couldn’t afford to lose my job-I jumped at the first offer I got. And my house is listed for sale. Can’t wait to get out of OP-and I’ve lived here since 1984. I agree with everything you’re saying about the management. It was my HOA dues being wasted too. I suggested a class action suit to recoup the losses. Viola just chuckled and said we’ll have a new GM soon. The board and Viola are as much to blame when they saw the numbers from the beginning of the summer and they did nothing. I could have written that forensic audit and saved everyone $200,000 but nobody listened or believed me. As a matter of fact there is a lot more I could add to it-but I wasn’t contacted. How many board members have quit? I think they realized what a hot mess they were a part of and got out so they wouldn’t be blamed.
As far as tip declaration-all servers and bartenders claimed their own tips, but if they received $200 in cc tips plus cash and only claimed $150-their claim was corrected, it’s the employers responsibility to make sure adequate tips are claimed. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Hill is the issue to me, for three reasons. One, the 6 figure golden parachute given to Townsend that has yet to be explained or justified by anyone. This should raise a ton of red flags now, and definitely needs a bit of exploration, in my mind. If some simple issues of theft of like 30 grand triggered a huge audit at great expense and fanfare, shouldn't inexplicable behavior like this have resulted in something similar? If OPers are upset at the theft/loss of less than 30 Gs, how angry should they be at 6 figures being given away to someone who kind of sucked at their job...for reasons not yet disclosed? In my mind, this is as big of a deal, if not bigger, than much of what the audit explored. And it was Hill's unilateral decision, to my understanding. The second reason is because the audit heavily implied incompetence as a reason for the huge fiscal losses incurred by food and bev, which is hysterical to me, because anyone with two working human eyes and a few brain cells could have (and did) told OPA that and saved residents some audit money. I mean...duh. Regardless of when the BOD realized that Hill was horribly unqualified to run food and bev, if memory serves, he had full operational control for several months, and the damage had been done by then. Who was put in charge after Hill? I seem to remember it being Townsend, though I could be mistaken. Three, the audit revealed (to my understanding of it) that Hill sold some OPA equiptment and instructed staff to keep it off the books and to make the transactions in cash. Another red flag. Another instance of this guy having behaved oddly with cash transactions. As far as any animosity towards Hill, I honestly had largely forgotten he existed until I saw the audit, and saw his comments regarding it. I wish him nothing but the best. He's a swell dude, and I'm sure everything he did had an entirely justifiable reason, and was done for the greater glory and success of Ocean Pines, and not at all for his personal benefit. (The truck goes "vroom!") As far as Beverly's comments about employee tips...I mean, yes, she said everything was legal. I'm not sure how legal it is for an employer to decide what their employees declare as far as tips. I'm not sure how legal it is to not give employees the opportunity to declare their own tips. I'm not sure how legal it is for employers to go back and alter what employees have declared after the fact. I'm not a lawyer. But if Beverly says everything was all above board, then it must be true. After all, how could we not trust the word and judgement of a woman who witnessed and was privy to all kinds of incompetence and shadiness for several years who decided to keep her mouth shut about it? But like I said...water under the bridge. It's all pretty funny to me now, how obvious all of this was to the people on the ground at the time it was happening, and how it took two years for everyone else to catch up. I wonder if anyone has sat down and gone over all the employee contracts to make sure that like, a landscaper or line cook isn't secretly guaranteed 80k if he gets fired... OPA should read this and pay attention to it, so they can avoid issues with it in the future. This place is as corruptable as any, and I hope they're paying attention this time. |
