Your idea to hire an internal auditor has some merit. The question wants to be if it needs to be a full time position. Initially the work load might be heavy but I think within a year there would be less in depth auditing of systems. I can tell you from first hand experience their is a tendency for even leadership positions to look the other way on long standing practices that may not be best practices. Change is hard for this community to accept and it follows through to the business management of OPA.
Also thanks for the nod to the political smackdown that I found myself in the middle of and ultimately became the scapegoat. It is nice that board members can acknowledge that they can do things better and differently next time. I for one never even was given a reason for the boards action... For the record while I was working more hours than budgeted, there was a lot of expectations but at no time was I considered a full-time employee. There are professionals that can bring a lot to the table on a part-time basis. The issue of having in house legal counsel could be satisfied via a PT professional. There are many who like myself who want less than a full-time commitment. And for the record I am confident that I saved the Association the value of my wages if not more during my ten month tenure. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I like your idea. OP is working with a very large budget and we need to monitor it. Thanks for your support of OP to add an internal auditor to the staff. Another task for such internal auditor is to review any "extras" being billed by contractors, beyond the initially agreed contractual price, prior to payment. That area of billings for "extras" is fertile ground for contractors to pad their profits. Needs plenty of scrutiny. Also estimates approved in advance, etc. etc. PS you may not be surprised that part of my working career I was an internal auditor. Tom |
