Joe,
Step one. Ask yourself, would be willing to be a black person in America? If not think about why not, it may uncover something of ones white privilege. Two, read about the Black experience in America. Three join Be The Bridge, to broaden ones experience. Join NAACP in Worcester County to build relationships and learn, see if white privilege is something leaders in NAACP would say is real. Eliminating white privilege is not likely to happen in our lifetime. Taking steps personally to understand it and actually use ones privilege to make a difference is possible. My journey started on a farm in rural Maine. Never even saw a person of color till I was in high school. Took a Greyhound bus to Boston to go to college. Had a work study job in Roxbury, the black section. A white farm boy, working in a YMCA. Everyone else was black. Visiting a hospital with kids injured playing basketball and seeing whites served again and again before the black youth I brought to the hospital. The journey goes on, may years have passed different cities, different countries, all have been part of my learning and I am still learning. There is a lot of literature on the topic easily accessible the the Worcester County Library as well. Steve |
