The VA itself acknowledges disparities in the VA: > First, providing access to health care doesn't, in itself, guarantee equal health outcomes. Second, the causes of health disparities in VA defy simple explanations, because the "usual suspects" of costs or overt bias are likely less important than other factors, such as gaps in health literacy and health activation; lack of cultural competence or unconscious bias among providers; stigma and other obstacles to accessing care, lack of trust in the health care system; and limited access to the community resources, networks, and social capital that support healthy living and appropriate medical care. And third, general improvement in the quality of care sometimes reduces disparities, but not always. > As a former broker you know that racial discrimination isn't just overtly treating someone different because of their skin color. Laws, rules, processes, behaviors, activities, etc., that result in disparity, even if unintentionally, also are discriminatory. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Daria: My current provider is the VA and I have never experienced or heard of any racial discrimination by the VA. Prior to switching to the VA for my healthcare I was spending in the neighborhood of $650.00 a month for quality health insurance for myself and my family. A common thread in your attachments is “uninsured tend to be disproportionately poor, young, and from racial and or ethnic minority groups” and another states “black men generally get fewer PSA screening and are more likely to be diagnosed with later stage cancer and are less likely to have health insurance “. Another attachment laid heavy blame on “bad lifestyle choices”. If I, or my family received better healthcare than an unemployed and uninsured person, regardless of skin color, I am OK with that. I don’t believe for a second that it has anything to do with racial discrimination. Marty |
