>>>I do not feel that those who are not binary are deviant; just different from many others<<<
I agree. However, I am not convinced all of our society and culture should be expected to change so our everyday language does not offend the sensibilities of a small minority. This is especially true of trans and what I see as this pronoun nonsense and use of female facilities by trans males, and male facilities by trans female as nonsense. To remove every statue, every image, every book, etc. that might offend anyone at any time is an impossible task. Yet some schools and colleges are attempting to do just that. Remove Columbus from a school calendar and and call it Day Off because some may be offended by Columbus Day. Carry this to a logical conclusion and we need to dump America as a name because Amerigo Vespucci assisted Columbus and was thus partly responsible for whatever wrongs Columbus did. Now I will tell myself to take it to Politics. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Hi Tom, Yes, perhaps I misread your post. I read it as Medicaid leveled the playing field for people of color to obtain access to health care. I may have missed your meaning of over the past 50-60 years access improved. Agreed; Medicaid improved access for people in abject poverty and those with disabilities. However, since it is a state and federal program, access and coverage varies by state. While it has brought about some improvements, there are still many in this country who are still uninsured, underinsured and, as I mentioned, Medicaid does not correct medical bias within health care. For this reason, I feel it is important to continue to shine a light on those disparities in health care until we have a better system of access and racial bias becomes a thing of the past. I guess you and I will have to agree to disagree (as I think we often do). I do not feel that those who are not binary are deviant; just different from many others. Doesn't make it wrong in my mind, just different. I looked over summaries of some of the books recommended for adolescents and did not find them objectionable. Certainly every family has a choice as to whether or not their child should read books that are written about different types of Americans. I am simply stating my opinion that the making these books available and encouraging folks to read about different life styles, cultures, challenges, beliefs and lived experiences is good for our country. This type of literature has not been easily available or a known entity in the past. Many publishing houses would not print books written by people of color in the past. This is changing now. This program helps us all to expand our minds - a good thing in my opinion. Good talking with you. |
