A-OK Vivian, there's some agreement: Medicaid improved access for people in abject poverty and those with disabilities.
Here's a site with per capita Medicaid stats. Click Here Maryland is in Table 1, covering states with high data thresholds. This data shows that in the year 2018 per capita benefits were $24,653 for folks with disabilities, $19,733 for the aged, and with the average of $9,132 for all categories. Lower amounts are going to low income folks under age 65 and children in need. An individual in the program for 10 years would receive over $90K of benefits, on average. Some significant coverage. Tax dollars well spent, and available to folks of all races who may unfortunately need such help. One can only imagine how such folks would manage without such help. Of course exceptions will always need addressing. Next time, please go over to the Politics Forum to debate. Thanks. Here's that link, Click Here Sign in with your same user name & password as on the Ocean Pines Forum. I did not see your info there, so I had to respond here. Have you looked at the 1776 Unites list of books? These days with all the divisiveness, the idea of folks getting along and promoting unity seems a top priority. Too bad the new administration has dropped that ball. Tell Ken I said Hi !!! |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Hi Tom, Yes, perhaps I misread your post. I read it as Medicaid leveled the playing field for people of color to obtain access to health care. I may have missed your meaning of over the past 50-60 years access improved. Agreed; Medicaid improved access for people in abject poverty and those with disabilities. However, since it is a state and federal program, access and coverage varies by state. While it has brought about some improvements, there are still many in this country who are still uninsured, underinsured and, as I mentioned, Medicaid does not correct medical bias within health care. For this reason, I feel it is important to continue to shine a light on those disparities in health care until we have a better system of access and racial bias becomes a thing of the past. I guess you and I will have to agree to disagree (as I think we often do). I do not feel that those who are not binary are deviant; just different from many others. Doesn't make it wrong in my mind, just different. I looked over summaries of some of the books recommended for adolescents and did not find them objectionable. Certainly every family has a choice as to whether or not their child should read books that are written about different types of Americans. I am simply stating my opinion that the making these books available and encouraging folks to read about different life styles, cultures, challenges, beliefs and lived experiences is good for our country. This type of literature has not been easily available or a known entity in the past. Many publishing houses would not print books written by people of color in the past. This is changing now. This program helps us all to expand our minds - a good thing in my opinion. Good talking with you. |
