I questioned using a firm in Washington State and was told that because of a restriction to film the ballot openings and something else that escapes me right now, options were limited.
Fake news, to some extent. Reporting on Poor choices by the OPA board or committees does not mean volunteers are not appreciated. The decision to use the Washington State company was ultimately a board decision, not a committee one. That said, the committee recommendation was not a good one. It was based solely on a desire to remove the committee from any involvement in the process, a major change to what transpired for 50 years or more - and worked until the board and committees in recent years decided to improve on what worked - and what worked well and without major controversy. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Mark - I feel your frustration and I'd feel the same way. I questioned using a firm in Washington State and was told that because of a restriction to film the ballot openings and something else that escapes me right now, options were limited. Refinements to those requirements will be sought in the future. I'd ask for a ballot to be overnighted with a prepaid overnight response envelope included. You may be engaged enough to request and respond to that but most would not. Unfortunately, that lowers the voter turnout through no fault of their own. I appreciated the response that I received from committee members and I thought that perhaps they could use some support. My thoughts are that the members overall (I've had contact with only two) implemented a plan that they thought would work. As it turned out they were let down and there was no back up plan in place. My guess is that they didn't think there needed to be. Joe made a good point that given the lack of confidence coming out of last year's elections that some better safeguards should have been in place to make sure that this year's election went smoothly. My guess is that the committee members feel the same way at this point I think that it would certainly be reasonable to extend the deadline to return allots by a full week and slip the annual meeting. More important to get as much OP member response as reasonable. I know that the members of all committees, on the whole, devote time for the benefit of all of us. Thanks for the response Mark. Don |
