Just checking, is “consultation with legal counsel on legal matters“ a defined reason for a closed session under Maryland law?
Yes. However, if, after that consultation, this board secretly votes to have its attorney send "cease and desist" letters with accusations of defaming the Board of Directors on Facebook, one must wonder if such a motion may occur in a closed session. Sources now report part of the accusations involve posts on Facebook that claimed members of the Board of Directors were taking "kickbacks" when some contracts were awarded, including expansion of the Yacht Club Tiki Bar. This may go back a couple of months. I was sent screenshots of the Facebook posts, and I think posted them here. While sources have not provided all evidence to back up this serious charge of defamation, the screenshots I saw with accusations of defamation were posted to Facebook by a male, former board majority supporter, and not by the three women sources say are the target of the board's anger. Also of interest, the board's near-no-meeting decision to have the board's attorney send these "cease and desist" letters from OPA's attorney was apparently leaked days ago to the operator of another Facebook site devoted to disgusting personal attacks and mocking, day in and day out for perhaps two years, of the three women said to be intended recipients of the letters. Pending any revelation of all the facts involved in this proposed board action, is seeking legal action over Facebook posts something our assessment dollars should be spent on? This Board of Directors, with a six-member majority, currently presides over one of the most prosperous and successful periods in the history of Ocean Pines. Why get involved in these petty Facebook squabbles? Makes no sense. |
