Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Republic Yard Waste Msg# 1214582

First. I just purchased yard waste bags at Home Depot. They were priced at 5 bags for $2.50. I picked up 4 packs, but was only charged $9.00, not $10.00. I inquired and the clerk said I got a discount for a bulk buy. Whatever, I'll take it. Bottom line? Buy four 5-packs at Home Depot and pay $9.00. This is a far cry from $2.00 a bag.
Thanks for that info. Jack Barnes said they were $2 a bag, perhaps from Public Works. I called Republic, and was told that Republic no longer picks up yard waste with the regular trash pick up. You have clearly shown the problem, and Republic is the cause. Here is the actual contract. You, I think, are a lawyer:
Republic headquarters in New Jersey has confirmed - on trash pickup days, customers in Ocean Pines can put our four bags of yard waste - in either paper or plastic bags. As I wrote, OPA needs to insist Republic comply with the contract. The problem is Republic top management knows and understands the terms of the contract but the local Republic people have no idea what is in the contarct and anyone calling the local office is likely to get any number of verisons depending on who happens to answer the phone. Incredibly, Republic upper management has not straightened the local employees out, especially since the Town Hall meeting a few weeks ago. Whaty is happening is ridculous and it is all Republic's fault. I am no lawyer, but the contract signed by Rick Farr seems terrific int erms of protecting OPA members, with the language about yard waste collection, and absolutelu no requirement that Republic customers must use any Republic-supplied can. Credit the good contract, I assume, to a thorough review by OPA counsel Bruce |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: First. I just purchased yard waste bags at Home Depot. They were priced at 5 bags for $2.50. Buy four 5-packs at Home Depot and pay $9.00. This is a far cry from $2.00 a bag. Second. Republic did not pick up my 4 bags of yard waste last week. Rather, they dumped my large trash can into the truck, then proceeded to dump my 4 yard waste bags into my large trash can, and left. I called Republic, and was told that Republic no longer will pick up yard waste with the regular trash pick up. Instead, they will have 6 special "Yard Event" dates coming up soon. 3 in November and 3 in December, where they will pick up yard bags. But I was told that they would come back and empty my trash can, now filled with pine needles and leaves. A few hours later this was accomplished. Just to make sure, I called again the next day, and was told the same thing by another phone operator. No longer will Republic pick up 4 yard bags with the regular collection. So next time down to the Pines (I am not full time) I guess I will load my truck up and head to the dump. I suppose time will tell whether Republic will pick up my yard bags on regular pick days, as has been reported in this forum. |
