Well, IMHO Ortt gave it the old college try and deserves some credit for that. The place was professionally run and the staff charming and well groomed.
Most folks would agree. Regarding financial success, as one pundit put it on this forum - back in 2017 or so OPA gave Ortt the ball on the 10-yard line. As for throwing Ortt under the bus, OPA legal counsel said OPA had to solicit bids since the Ortt contract was up. OPA did so. The bids were presented to the board in a closed session. The board picked what it thought was the best bid and authorized the GM to negotiate a contract with that bidder. In recent years, OPA made very little while Ortt walked away with $500,000 or so profit. Not exactly the 50-50 split association members believe is in place. There is also the issue of Ortt having zero risk. OPA places all the needed expense money, (all costs including labor) in a separate bank account, and Ortt just writes checks on it. Hopefully, any new contract will not include such questionable terms. He attempted to attract a slightly more affluent customer in contrast to, say, the South Gate Grill and Taylors who bottom feed with the gimme a natural light can crowd that skedaddle like a scalded dog when HH ends. Do you eat lunch or dinner very often at the Yacht Club? Are you familiar with Pines Public House? Anyway, it is open and very busy. As for the "affluent" customers at the Yacht Club, you are correct - they are not leaving after a happy hour because the Yacht Club is closed. It is closed because those "affluent" customers you talk about simply do not eat there. They are at Pines Public House. Jack Barnes and I ate lunch at the Yacht Club every Tuesday all summer. The restaurant was virtually empty. Often we were the only customers in the bar area and the adjacent restaurant was nearly empty as well. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Well, IMHO Ortt gave it the old college try and deserves some credit for that. He attempted to attract a slightly more affluent customer in contrast to, say, the South Gate Grill and Taylors who bottom feed with the gimme a natural light can crowd that skedaddle like a scalded dog when HH ends. Ortt stepped up to the plate and took his swings and has now been thrown under the bus for his efforts. Pardon the cliches. With that $170K depreciation charge, good luck to his successors. They are gonna need it. |
