Worcester County, Maryland, has secured federal funding to support several water infrastructure projects. For instance, $3.86 million has been allocated to the Newark Water Treatment Plant to improve water treatment capabilities and ensure a reliable supply of clean water. In 2022, the county applied for a $1 million Rural Maryland Grant through the Tri-County Council—could this be related to the recent funding?

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Here is some interesting information from the board meeting today, courtesy of Commissioners Bertino and Bunting: We learned that of the original $9.2 million outstanding loan to financially failing water and sewer service areas, none of that loan went to the Ocean Pines service area. We also learned that of the $9.2 million, only about $6.5 million must be repaid. Why? Because $2.7 million of the $9.2 million was given to the Riddle Farms service area by the County Commissioners as a gift from the County taxpayers. Why? On the premise that the County Public Works employees caused the problems with their system. If this is not an outrage of the year, what is? Why? Because a few years ago, Ocean Pines ratepayers had to foot the bill due to loss of sewage outflow quality after a County employee did not inform supervisors that a rake head had fallen into a system pipe. At that time, Commissioner Bertino made the case to his fellow Commissioners that the County should have covered the additional cost, not the Ocean Pines ratepayers. They refused. Yet, when it came to Glen Riddle, arguably one of the wealthiest HOAs in the County, the Commissioners saw it differently and gave Glen Riddle a gift of $2.7 million taxpayer dollars. The other item is the revelation that Glen Riddle owes the largest amount of the $2.2 million operations defit for all districts last year. Glen Riddle's share of that loss is over $1 million. The Ocean Pines share is $117K. Fiori, Elder & Company seem intent on rubbing more salt in the wounds of Ocean Pines by forcing ratepayers here to subsidize Glen Riddle. |
