Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Community Center Contract Msg# 388260

Marty, It is obvious that the original $3.9 million number as a total project cost is impossible...and I for one believe some increase is appropriate given that figure dates to 2005 and costs have escalated. Since I have no experience in the building trade I have no idea as to what might be "appropriate." It is unfortunate the original estimate was so far off the mark...but given the recent cost of other commercial construction around the county the current estimates for this building do not seem out of line. IMHO we are not likely to get it any cheaper somewhere down the road. My focus is on the fact that the board has a responsibility to do everything possible to accomplish what was proposed...not to take off on yet another tangent. If STOP is successful in halting the project I would surmise everything...including size and location...would then become fair game. But we are not there yet...it is not time to begin yet another community center project until the fat lady sings on this one. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Bob: "do everything possible to bring about the center they approved..." That would be magic! How does one do that when this fiasco is already 38% over the referendum approved cost projections and the building does not yet even have a building permit? Marty |
