10/24/2007 Todd Hosts Crime Meeting On Saturday, October 27 Worcester County State's Attorney Joel Todd held a "Crime Meeting" at the Ocean Pines Branch of the Worcester County Library. Mr. Todd was joined by Ocean Pines Police Chief Dave Massey, Colonel Doug Dods, Worcester County Sheriff's Office and Lieutenant Earl Starner, Commander of the Berlin Barrack of the Maryland State Police. About 30 people turned out during heavy rains for the 10 a.m. meeting. Each of the police representatives delivered an overview regarding the role of their department and all stressed the cooperative relationship between the various law enforcement agencies. Chief Massey stressed the importance of community based crime prevention efforts such as Neighborhood Watch and told of his efforts to grow the program within Ocean Pines. Mr. Todd then provided an overview of the Worcester State's Attorney's Office, various programs within his agency and insight on how his prosecutors operate. His office currently consists of eight full-time attorneys and one part-time prosecutor, along with three investigators to handle a caseload generated by some 350 sworn law enforcement officers throughout the county. A computer generated presentation on Methamphetamine or "Meth," a dangerous and highly addictive substance with the potential of finding its way into the county was provided to highlight the serious implications its presence holds for the community. Mr. Todd summarized that the drug ruins every life it touches and noted that the drug has found its way to the Virginia portion of the Eastern Shore, but there is no indication that "Meth labs" or major distribution networks currently operate within the county. He noted that the substance could severely impact the enforcement and treatment resources of the county. While there were few specifics regarding crime or crime statistics the program did provide insight regarding law enforcement and criminal prosecution for attendees.
