Section 5: OPA Board Subject: WHP/New Fire House Msg# 572694

I do believe that our homes are aging, many have older wiring systems, and the residents in the north side will be somewhat better served by our taking this action. Hummmm. That is a reason to build a new fire station, one that will ultimately be staffed full time? If that theory was applied to Baltimore City they would be building a new fire house on every block. How about some real statistics and facts that demonstrate a true NEED. Looking at the web sites for Pocomoke City, Berlin and Ocean Pines: Fire/Rescue Responses for 2008: EMS 2008: I don't see info on number of stations for Pocomoke. Maybe someone else knows. Berlin has two stations. Here's Berlin's second station: Note that Berlin VFD is responsible for large areas outside of Berlin. There is no info on the web about Showell but they serve the River Run subdivision. Look at this map of the land area covered by the various fire departments and then have someone explain why there is a NEED for two ambulance stations and two fire stations in the subdivision of Ocean Pines: |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Nancy, I am pleased that you can live with the decision the Board made to allow the FD to occupy that space. Please note, however, that what you saw this morning are not the "plans." What you saw were the second phase of concept drawings that indicate the way the OPVFD and the architects are moving toward. I want to remind you and everyone that I am not the spokesperson for this issue and was simply attempting to inform an interested member of our association of information still in the development stage. I can assure you that some of us are considering the impacts on the open space, the members who live near by, and all of the members of OPA who will be served by the OPVFD. For those who question the "need" I have shared your concerns and believe we could have provided more information to alleviate those concerns. No matter what data would have been provided, in the end the numbers might not have been convincing enough to please everyone. I do believe that our homes are aging, many have older wiring systems, and the residents in the north side will be somewhat better served by our taking this action. Bill |
