Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Golf Rumblings Msg# 802752

Rumblings are emanating from the golf community in Ocean Pines about the condition of the OP golf course. Apparently many of the greens are in terrible shape; some of the golf drainage project work completed over the last several years was apparently not done correctly (millions spent); some golf members reportedly want their money back. I do not play golf, but I live on the 8th fairway. I can tell you the turf is in unbelievably poor shape. I have not seen it look this bad in the 5 previous seasons I lived here. It looks like it is primarily crabgrass now. Another poster mentioned that the wrong grasses were used. Well the grass is the same as has been here for the last 5 years. This is poor maintenance.
At the end of the day what do the contracts call for, were the contracts evaluated by someone within OP that would have knowledge in these areas, and who in OP management is evaluating the quality of the product provided?

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Rumblings are emanating from the golf community in Ocean Pines about the condition of the OP golf course. Apparently many of the greens are in terrible shape; some of the golf drainage project work completed over the last several years was apparently not done correctly (millions spent); some golf members reportedly want their money back. Casper sent out an email to golf members on the problems with an explanation of what they say is the cause and corrective action in the works. The question unanswered is why the deterioration was allowed to happen (pre or post Casper), and why the expensive golf drainage project may not have been done properly. One golfer, comparing OP to Rum Pointe in terms of course condition alone, said if Rum Pointe was a 10 then OP might be a five. The Ocean Pines Golf Advisory Committee has not met for almost a year, with the chairman saying there is no point in meeting. Strangely, the committee was not even listed as an OP committee in the last quarterly newsletter. OPA's General Manager, perhaps in line with a policy of only focusing on good news, has not mentioned any golf course problems to the Board of Directors at their meetings. |
