For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Gene, I thought you might enjoy the following email response from OPA Director Terri Mohr about your humor piece. >>>He should have spelled checked before submitting.<<< I replied: I assume you refer to his use of Cemetary versus Cemetery. The very best writers in the world make grammatical and spelling errors. Spell-check programs cannot catch all spelling errors, especially with regard to intended usage. Ant versus aunt, for example. That’s why publishers employ editors. Even then mistakes end up in print. However, Gene’s error is inexcusable, a terrible thing. I will properly admonish him. Perhaps a public apology is in order. >Sigh< By the way, to nit-pick, your use of “spelled check” is not grammatically correct. The proper verb for your sentence is “spell-checked.” A better sentence might be, “He should spell-check before submitting.” Then again, you have me thinking. I will ask Gene if he spelled checked before submitting. Should he have spelled “checked” out loud before submitting? However, since the word “checked” is not in his piece, I’m not sure why he would have done so. So, Mr. Ringsdorf - did you spell checked before submitting? If so, did you spell checked out loud or only to yourself mentally? |
