We were not camping.  We just drive up and launch from the ramp at the west end of the pond.  (There is a fee to be paid at the entrance to the picnic area.)  The heron was approximately 1/4 mile from the ramp.  We like to paddle up the stream at the east end of the pond.  It is completely shaded by the trees and is like entering another world.
