For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: According to a story in the Baltimore Sun a 42-year-old waterman from Tilghman Island is going to jail for a year. He is also the chief of the local fire department. William Lednum poached so many striped bass back in 2011 that, "After state officials assessed the damage, they suspended the season for nearly three weeks and eventually cut the overall quota for all watermen by 5 percent. Officials said it was the only time that a single poaching event had led to such restrictions." The article also states Lednum admitted to illegally selling a total of 185,925 pounds of rockfish worth nearly $500,000, according to court records. It took the state two days and four boats to recover 20,000 pounds (10 tons) of striped bass from illegal underwater nets before the season even opened. The convicted waterman's defense by some other locals -- "Everybody was doing it." |
