As I recall, after much discussion, it was decided that it was a heron.....and not Big Foot.

We need a refresher on that story. I may be wrong on the final word.

I know I heard a frog......for sure, and it must be a whopper!

It was not a "crazy screeching sound". That would have been simply passed off as a screech owl or some such.

This was something that some folks thought was similar to the call of a bull gator.

I did some research and decided it was a wading bird probably at the end of Manklin Creek or perhaps in one of the Parke's ponds.

And the bird IMHO was an American Bittern which is a type of  heron. Petersons Guide to Birds says this about the voice: "the pumping song of the bittern which we hear in the swamps in spring is a slow deep oong-ka-chook --oong-ka-chook--oong ka chook etc. Distorted by distance the ka is often the only syllable and sounds like a mallet driving a stake into the mud."

Crypto zoology would be an interesting pastime on the Delmarva peninsula. I met a farmer in the Steer Inn a few years back who told me that there was a breeding population of panthers/cougars in the Selbyville Frankford area and that it was common knowledge to old timers there who saw them infrequently.
