One way to do this is to have a significant number of people band together, agree on critical budget items to be addressed then present these items to the BoD with a large number of supporters in attendance.
I understand your point, and the board does sometimes respond to numbers. However, it would be a complicated process/explanation to put together before next Saturday. However, the board will meet again after that for final approval. Perhaps a crowd shows up and demands a reduction in the assessment to $100 or more lower than last year, with a concurrent demand that we want to know specifically what is changed to do so. Beyond the assessment amount, association members don't really have a clue as to what the GM is proposing for capital expenses and those projects are essentially not really clearly represented in the assessment amount. Why would the GM include tens of thousands for a police station study when the big picture plan he presents calls for a major public safety building complex out on 589? We have no money to maintain bathrooms at the Beach Club, but we budget $250,000 for pickleball and then see the bid come in at $780,000 and the GM refuses to formally tell the board what the bid amount was. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Doug There is enough ammunition in the details of OPA's budget and financial management data to show the absolute farce the budget management process is in OPA. The problem is making these issues known to association members in time to have the proposed budget significantly changed. One way to do this is to have a significant number of people band together, agree on critical budget items to be addressed then present these items to the BoD with a large number of supporters in attendance. If the group is organized enough it could conduct fact-based letters to the editors campaign and/or paid ads to publicize the issues and name the directors who are for or against the critical issues. This is a lot to do in a short time. One concern I have is how quickly the community budget review meeting is upon us. To my recollection, this meeting was normally conducted in mid-February. Another concern I have is that the draft budget details are NOT posted on the OPA website. Thus, attendees at the community review meeting will only have available edited summary data prepared by OPA management for the sake of selling the budget. |
