Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Money is No Object Msg# 945555

My motion was to amend Mr. Terry's motion by providing Pickle Ball and Platform courts requested by their respective membership's as a reasonable alternative to the Manklin Creek Project.
Yes, and a motion the board should have passed. But it did not. It passed Terry's original motion. Then you made your original motion to amend as a standalone motion. Terry made a motion to amend that weakened it even more. Terry's amendment passed, then the motion passed. I think what Dave was getting at is why pass your second motion (a standalone one) that tells the GM to look into using existing tennis courts for pickleball courts and adding a paddleball court. For one thing, pickleball players are already using the tennis courts. For another why on earth even ask the GM to look into using tennis courts for pickleball immediately AFTER the board voted to spend $150,000 to prepare another area for eight new pickleball courts but not yet build them. Here's what will happen. This board or future boards will vote to build the eight new pickleball courts and all the other associated work with the GM's master plan, or not. If not, then we just threw $150,000 down a sewer. If they are all eventually built, it will result in even more money going down a sewer. You did your best, but nothing, absolutely nothing, trumps four votes. If the election this year does not result in a board with at least four members willing to look for a new GM, nothing will change. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: "Is Dave correct? If so, then just color me more confused on this issue." Joe, Color many people confused on this issue. A slim majority of members on the Board approved of a motion with no definition of scope or detail of the project nor of the cost factor involved. To approve any project and allocate association funds without knowing exactly what is in fact going to be done is fiscally irresponsible to our membership. I tried to make my thoughts very clear on this matter at the last Board meeting. As for Mr. Stevens allegation that "Mr. Herrick's proposal is a farce" and "if you (I take that as referring back to me) are going to that seriously why would you clear space to put it somewhere else?" My motion was to amend Mr. Terry's motion by providing Pickle Ball and Platform courts requested by their respective membership's as a reasonable alternative to the Manklin Creek Project. The Playground project should be a separate issue in my opinion. The Board majority approved going ahead with part of Phase 1 of the Manklin Creek Project which includes moving the playground for (as they reasoned) possible (hopeful) use of the area for future board's to consider. I as you know, did not vote to clear this space to move the playground. Mr. Terry's amendment to my motion then passed by a 6-1 vote, which Mr. Stevens, by the way, approved. Tom Herrick |
