They also served as the patrol cars for the Texas Highway Patrol. Back in '59 & '60 when I was stationed in West Texas, Del Rio, there was no speed limit on old US 90 headed west. I can remember tooling along in my Mercury at about 105 MPH and one of them passed me like I was in neutral! The road was as flat as the top of a table and as straight as a string for miles and miles so you could really let your car unwind.
