Joe, if that site was the solution for our drainage problem I would have supported it, but it wasn’t then and isn’t now. The “concept” plans by Vista Design Inc. provide no cost estimates whatsoever. They do show a lift station due to the rise in elevation from our outfall and the site location. The price required for the land acquisition was only the beginning of what would have been a very expensive project, perhaps as much as the cost to effect a path down Beauchamp Road which everyone agrees is the best solution.
The above is yet more disinformation. Back in September 2020, GM Viola reported the project's total cost at $2.2 million. The state was providing a grant of around $475,000. The project cost was then reduced substantially because the developer of the Pine Shore property decided at the last minute not to allow OP to send water to a stormwater pond that would be built on the old golf course. That dropped the cost of the project to about $800,000 Viola said. So, we are now doing that work, but the net impact on flooding may be questionable because we still have no place to send the water. You say running the water to the golf course would cost "perhaps as much as the cost to effect a path down Beauchamp Road." The facts refute that off-the-cuff comment. Running down Beauchamp Road cost was about $14 million a decade or more ago. Today it could well be $20 million or more. (My apologies. The amount a decade ago was $4 million, not $14 million and the cost today was estimated to be around $8 million.) Cost if we bought Pine Shore: $1.8 million for the property. $2.2 million to get OP water to the property (might be less as the $2.2 million may have included some payment to the developer. Need to verify.). Total $4 million. Less say $500,000 from the state for a cost of $3.5 million. Add another $500,000 for unknowns. Cost of $4 million. OP sells the land to a developer for the bargain-basement price of $1 million. Our cost is now $3 million. That is a far cry from perhaps $20 million. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Joe: I can’t believe you are buying into this BS. The initial plans to purchase that property had no more to do with drainage then a new airport. The “it’s for drainage” mantra was nothing more then a straw man after the board got caught red handed trying to buy that golf course property. Joe, if that site was the solution for our drainage problem I would have supported it, but it wasn’t then and isn’t now. The “concept” plans by Vista Design Inc. provide no cost estimates whatsoever. I am comfortable with my opposition of this boondoggle and would do exactly the same today. Marty |
