The LGBTQ+ Voices books are not about sex. They're about sexuality and identity, which teens start exploring long before they become sexually active.
Vetted literature from LGBTQ+ voices and the eight other voices represented in the program -- African American, Asian American, Diverse Abilities, Female, Hispanic American, Immigration, Native American and Poverty and Homelessness -- give teens a safe and healthy outlet for sorting out who they are and where they fit in. And just as importantly, for understanding the experiences of people who are different than they are and have points of view that differ from their own. Isn't that what we've always relied on literature to do? |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Please read Tom Hemmick’s Reply on the 1776 curric. This is what I would suggest. I really don’t feel middle school children need to be talking about sex all the time. Do you? |
