I have not been keeping up with the forum postings lately so apologize for responding to you days after your original post. Medicaid did indeed provide medical care to those in need but in no way leveled the playing field. I will not get into those who do not qualify for Medicaid but still cannot afford healthcare…that’s a discussion for another post. I will however point out that racial bias is alive and well in medical care. One need only look at maternal and infant mortality rates for non-Hispanic black women in the US. The disparity is real and is present even when controlled for underlying conditions. Look at skin cancers. Often missed in people of color. The fact that medical texts have almost no pictures of skin abnormalities on non-Caucasian skin contribute to this problem. A meta analysis of pain management done in 2016 shows that African Americans are routinely under treated for pain due to the belief among many, many health care providers that black people have a higher pain tolerance (which is false and based on earlier statements from slave owners who routinely beat their slaves). As a nurse I witnessed the withholding of pain medicine myself. These are just a few examples.
So no, the playing field regarding healthcare ,just as in so many other areas of our society, for people of color is far from level. I am happy to know that the Woke Read program is in Worcester County. How can it possibly be detrimental for any of us to learn about our fellow citizens who are different from us? For so many generations the books in libraries have been books written by white people about white people. Its time to hear the voices and read about the lived experiences of others; African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Americans living in poverty, Americans with disabilities, Americans who are LGBTQ. I can’t see a down side for me or my grandkids to learn about others’ perspectives. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Medicaid of today has largely erased any racial inequalities of medical care compared to 50 or 60 years ago. As you likely now recognize. Come-on man. [a prez quote] |
