| "lack of cultural competence..,.gaps in health literacy" are really nice terms for the fact that some people are not intelligent enough or sometimes do not care enough to take care of their health. Sad but true and to the extent that they are people of color, they get lumped into the general category of "racial disparities" in health care. The governor of NJ was talking yesterday of "vaccination equity". The term is meaningless in his state where vaccine is there for the taking by anyone who wants it. Even the few who are truly homebound have by now gotten the shots....if they are truly motivated. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The VA itself acknowledges disparities in the VA: > First, providing access to health care doesn't, in itself, guarantee equal health outcomes. And third, general improvement in the quality of care sometimes reduces disparities, but not always. > As a former broker you know that racial discrimination isn't just overtly treating someone different because of their skin color. Laws, rules, processes, behaviors, activities, etc., that result in disparity, even if unintentionally, also are discriminatory. |
