Section 5: OPA Board Subject: Disgraceful Vote on Lakernick Msg# 1153477

I received the following reply from Doug Parks this morning:
Jim, In response to your inquiry, I have always taken the position that it is the responsibility and duty of the committee chair to interview an applicant to determine if their qualifications are consistent with that of the committee. I also rely on that process as board members do not usually conduct a personal interview of the applicant. The application form contains a section where the chair endorses the application and a section where the board liaison to the committee also endorses the applicant. That form is presented and is placed on the agenda for an upcoming board meeting. You should note that there is no requirement for a committee chair to submit all applications he/she receives. If, during the interview process, a committee chair determines that the applicant would not be a good fit for the committee, it is well withing their authority to decline the application and not present it to the board for consideration. In my six years on the board I have been comfortable with accepting the recommendation from committee chairs and have voted accordingly. I recognize the importance of members volunteering their time to serve the community by working on a committee as an important facet of living here in Ocean Pines. A general rule of thumb I follow is that in a volunteer organization you should not turn down a volunteer. I will continue to support the recommendations from committee chairs on the applicants they present who are willing to spend time in support of our community. Doug Parks Director, OPA |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I emailed the following to the Board of Directors. If I receive any answers, I will post them here. Directors: The Ocean Pines Board of Directors has recommended that someone who wants to become a board member volunteer to serve on an advisory committee in order to learn more about how OPA operates. I think that such service would be valuable experience for a potential board member. A person who has run for the Ocean Pines Board twice in the past (and will probably run in the future) recently volunteered for one of the two available seats on our Strategic Planning Committee. He has been denied the opportunity to serve, with no explanation or discussion of this rejection. Most committee applicants are approved unanimously. In some meetings, the list of applicants is read, and they are all approved in a mass vote. As a member of this community, I think that the BOD at least owes the above applicant, and the community, an explanation of why the application was rejected, and what the applicant needs to do before the next meeting in order to become a committee member. I'm trying to understand the apparent logical disconnect in the first two paragraphs. I hope I'm wrong, but it appears that those voting against approval for the committee appointment would not want this person to be elected to the board. Thank you in advance for your response.
