Steve, see the link below where you will notice I was suggesting outside management of the Yacht Club in 2011.
In that 2011 discussion, I wrote: "The board needs to clarify this situation, either voting to allow Thompson another year based on something more than a "trust me" business plan or enter negotiations with Casper to take over all food and beverage operations if they are still interested. Perhaps other companies are interested as well. If the board wants to outsource food and beverage next year, discussions with potential individuals or companies must begin now." With regard to Tom Stauss, below is Commentary he wrote in January 2012: "Reaffirm the Yacht Club business plan as suggested by General Manager Bob Thompson that envisions the Yacht Club as primarily a summer destination, with some room to accommodate “open for business” in the shoulder months. As recently described by Thompson, a new Yacht Club would close during the winter months, except for special banquet events at the amenity that would be held on the new building’s second floor. This is a business with historical roots – it was the original operating plan for the Yacht Club in its earliest years – and it remains a plan that has produced a break-even operation at the Yacht Club as recently as two years ago. This past October, the Yacht Club produced a modest surplus open seven days a week; imagine what that profit could have been if it had been open during the prime Friday to Sunday period only. "Thompson has announced that kind of attenuated schedule beginning this month; it will be interesting to see whether the results will more closely resemble October, with its modest profit, or November, in which the club lost more than $45,000. If January replicates November’s results, then the board and Thompson should apply that new found knowledge, by affirming that a new Yacht Club’s business plan will call for the facility’s closure for four or five months during winter, with the possible accommodation of special catered events on an ad hoc basis." |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: If I recall, there was somewhat of an uproar and blow-back from year round locals (and rightly so in my opinion) over the fact that there was no indoor dining/bar for off-season service . Thompson's attempt to alter the plans and include the indoor bar resulted in somewhat of a snafu regarding the current bar . . . it is enclosed by doors, which the fire department inspector considered egress (exits for emergencies) and the dimensions of the bar itself had to be shrunk after it was already installed. The finished product led to various complaints and criticisms by bar staff re how difficult it was to work behind that bar . . . i think it was because equipment took up too much floor space due the bar being 'shrunk'. In my opinion, the architect dropped the ball if he wasn't aware of local fire dept code, seems like architecture 101. The nicer bar/bar area (in my opinion) is in what used to be (wasted) lobby space and was Brett Hill's idea. Of course Brett Hill's 'ideas' led to astronomical single-year losses (more than 600k i think), which finally led to the OPA realizing - - after losing millions at 200k+ losses a year for decades - - that maybe we should try professionals for the food service. (It's somewhat ironic that the same board members who were ok with 200k losses, and who then enabled the Brett Hill debacle, are now patting themselves on the back for the successes of the Ortt company.) It's interesting to note (again, my recollection) that down thru the years Tom Stauss (Progress) was the only local journalist to promote having professionals taking over the food service operation. Even the Clubs Committee majority (I was a minority of one) was all for maintaining the status quo (ie perpetual losses). BTW, I disagree that there was to be parking under the building . . . Bob Thompson clearly stated that area was to be open-air dining, and as someone points out the architects drawing illustrates that. Steve Lind Stones Run |
